LITTER

by An Old Codger

Author: Neil Davies

The curse of our nation. Two million pieces a day, one billion pound a year to clear; a throw away generation, with a lack of respect.

From fag ends to plastic, dog poo to car tyres. Drink cans to barbeques, burgers to chips. Over countryside, seaside, mountains and vales. In the seas and the oceans, canals and on our streets. Farmland and bridleways, parks and ponds.

Why are we so untidy? Does it start in the home?
I have written a short poem on this subject. It is in BOOK THREE of POEMS BY AN OLD CODGER.

IT DOES NOT HAPPEN BY ITSELF!

Don’t put it down, put it away,
Don’t leave it there, do as I say.
Those things in the floor won’t wash by themselves,
Or are you expecting a squadron of laundry elves?

Why is the towel trailing the floor,
And your pyjamas hanging on the bathroom door?
Along with your socks, an unsightly pair
And the sink drain is full of your blue bleached hair.

Your shoes are here and there, all over the place,
And one of your shoes has lost its lace.
Who are you waiting for to clean your shoes?
It’s time to wake up and pay your dues.

Cleanliness is next to godliness, some will say,
Elbow grease is free, otherwise you pay.
I guess these words are familiar to many,
Young and old, as we try to live in harmony.

Could it be that we all have too much,
A throw-away lifestyle or one of debauch?
How we work, how we live, what we do,
This country’s fighting litter left around by you.
